IT/EN

Tipi studio placed in Bologna, Madrid and San Marino, opens in 2015 from the cooperation between Alfredo Borghi and Cecilia Carattoni. Its activities concern architecture, urban and landscape design, always searching for innovative solutions nevertheless employing natural and low-impact methods, focusing on environmental quality in contemporary living. Tipi studio deals with design at all scales, often reaching down to the very modelling of construction materials, combining ideas, representation and craftsmanship, with particular interest for productive processes, reuse, recycled materials and traditional construction techniques.

The tipi is the conical tent used by Native Americans nomads moving throughout the northern Great Plains; the word comes for the Lakota dialect (thìpì) and means dwelling. A tipi is made of few elements: a series of sticks placed along an elliptical-shaped lane, covered in leather and strings to keep it together, and an internal lining for condensation control. The uppermost opening and the flexibility of the leather coating allow for a good ventilation and grant an exhaust to the smoke in case fires where to be lit inside for cooking or heating. It is a comfortable shelter; it can be disassembled and moved elsewhere, without impacting on the environment. The tipi is a simple good idea.
